Accutane is used to treat severe acne that has not responded to other treatment. It is a prescription drug that is taken orally. Accutane is not recommended for use during pregnancy and is considered dangerous due to the high rate of infants born to women exposed to Accutane during the first trimester having birth defects, including craniofacial defects, heart defects, and central nervous system defects. Using Accutane is strongly discouraged by the Food and Drug Administration to be taken by pregnant women because of the birth defect, miscarriages, and premature birth risks. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits about taking Accutane, especially during your childbearing years. Updated: 07.28.10
