Lidocaine is used commonly as a local anesthetic during dental procedures (Lidocaine has replaced Novocaine/Xylocaine® in modern dentistry). The Food and Drug Administration has labeled lidocaine as a Category B for safety during pregnancy. This means that studies in pregnant women have not shown an increase in risk to the fetus. However, lidocaine does cross the placenta after administration and it is recommended that this medication only be used when needed. You should consult your dentist about the possible risks and benefits of using lidocaine. It should also be noted that experts recommend waiting until the second trimester to complete necessary dental work. Updated: 02.07.12
