Oxycontin is a narcotic painkiller used to relieve moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time. The Food and Drug Administration has labeled Oxycontin as a Category B for safety in pregnancy. Category B states that there is no evidence of risk in humans through adequate studies in pregnant woman or no fetal risk in animal studies. However, the FDA warns that even though the chance of fetal harm is remote, there still remains the possibility. This medication should only be used after consulting your doctor about the risks and if the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the fetus. Narcotic drugs can pass through your body in breast milk and should not be used while breast-feeding. Updated: 04.22.18
