Xanax, a name brand for alprazolam in the benzodiazepine family, is used to treat moderate to severe panic attacks and anxiety disorders. Xanax is labeled by the Food and Drug Administrated as a Category D for safety in pregnancy. Category D states that there is positive evidence through human testing of fetal risk. If Xanax is taken in high doses, it may cause the fetus to have dependency on the drug and may lead to withdrawal symptoms upon birth. Use during pregnancy may cause body temperature problems, breathing problems, difficulty feeding, drowsiness or muscle weakness in newborn infants. Updated: 07.28.10
